George Farbotko, SDHS Class of 1966

George Farbotko was in the Class of '66. He was an incredible artist whom Sister Laurena was so very proud of. He was two years ahead of me, and I remember being mesmerized by George's sculptural talent when he was a teen. Most vivid in my mind is a carving of the Blessed Virgin that he made from a discarded piano cover.

Spotlight on Art: Abiding Observer by George Farbotko.

Sculpture Overview:

Abiding Observer introduces viewers to a whimsical character called “Farwink,” created by artist George Farbotko. Farwink embodies a peaceful counterbalance to the many societal challenges we face, such as war, social strife and political turmoil. In the sculpture, this surreal creature offers an escape from such tensions, radiating calm and inviting those who pass by to share in its tranquil state of being.

The sculpture is made from carved Virginia cedar, with the Farwink seated atop an oak column that exemplifies Farbotko’s skill and ingenuity.

The column, standing at 26 inches by 18 inches by nine feet, is meticulously crafted and supported by a base made of steel and black plastic lumber. His innovative process for creating the column was equally impressive: he hand-carved and turned the oak on a homemade lathe, constructed from lumber and steel plates, powered by a motor with adjustable pulleys and belts. The tool rest, made from plywood and a skateboard, allowed for a precise and refined shaping of the log. The combination of traditional craftsmanship and creative engineering gives the sculpture its unique character, merging artistry with technical prowess.
