2018 Commencement Exercises

Congratulations to the Class of 2018!

Welcome to the Alumni Association!

On June 2, 104 members of the Class of 2018 became St. Dominic’s newest alumni. These graduates have been accepted to 157 colleges, universities and military service academies. The Baccalaureate Mass for the students, parents and faculty took place the evening before.

Commencement Speaker Taps Gallagher:
1972 graduate Taps Gallagher was the 87th commencement speaker, delivering an impassioned speech with wise advice on being kind and helpful to others.

Taps Gallagher is a 1972 graduate of St. Dominic who lived in Massapequa while attending high school. While at St. Dominic, he was a varsity letterman in basketball, track and golf. He received a basketball scholarship to St. Mary’s University in Nova Scotia, Canada, where he was a member of a national championship basketball team and was also his class valedictorian. To this day, he is the only American student to achieve that honor. Mr. Gallagher went on to receive a Master’s Degree in Public Administration at St. John’s University in New York City, graduating summa cum laude. He then proceeded to Loyola University School of Law in Chicago, Illinois where he received his Juris Doctorate Degree.
Upon graduation, Mr. Gallagher was appointed as a Special Assistant Attorney General and also served on the Character and Fitness Committee for the Illinois Bar Examiners for a period of nine (9) years. This position is an appointment from the Illinois Supreme Court.
Mr. Gallagher is an author of a book entitled “Stolen Glory”, which describes the sudden and shocking turn of events that snatched the Gold victory from the United States at the 1972 Summer Olympic Basketball Game in Munich, Germany. At the present time, he is representing the players in a quest to procure the gold medals that they were deprived of. The screenplay was just completed and a movie is contemplated for the year 2022, which will be the 50 year anniversary of the game.
Mr. Gallagher is also a basketball coach and referee who has been involved in all levels of competition from grammar school through high school. He has coached the Chicago Blaze who was in the women’s WNBA. He is a member of St. Mary’s University, Nova Scotia, and Canadian Hall of Fames. He currently practices law in Chicago where he specializes in personal injury. He has been married for 34 years and has three (3) daughters. Over the years, he has been involved with St. Dominic High School supporting the annual auction as well as providing scholarships for St. Dominic students.

Valedictorian, Alexandria Rothschild-Edwards:
Alexandria Rothschild-Edwards, was presented with the Valedictorian medal. Our Valedictorian has been the recipient of 20 total Underclass Awards throughout her time as a student at St. Dominic High School. She is a true leader in every sense of the word, serving as the President of each of the following: the National Honor Society, the Italian Honor Society, the English Honor Society, the Future Business Leaders of America, the Mock Trial club, and the Model U.N. team, among numerous other noteworthy positions of leadership. She holds membership in six of our Honor Society’s, and has been a member of our highly selective STEM Scholars Program throughout her high school career. She has completed internships alongside members of U.S. Congress, and debated global issues with both the Yale University and Columbia University’s Model U.N. Institutes. She was named an AP Scholar with Distinction, and has mentored and represented her peers as a Bayhawk Leader, a member of the Student Council, and as her Class Vice President. She will be attending Johns Hopkins University in the fall, to study Global Affairs and Economics, with an interest in attending Law school in the future.
